The Zika virus is making headlines across the country and across the world, mainly because the Zika virus has been closely linked with microcephaly, a condition that causes babies to be born with an underdeveloped brain. Unlike what some may have heard, the Zika virus is not fatal, however it has been shown that the virus itself remains in the body for several weeks— or longer. Pregnant women or women who are trying to conceive should try to avoid travel to parts of the world that have been identified as “affected by the Zika virus”, including: parts of The Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
